The Big Flood Cleanup in Vestal

Broome County officials say they want to help residents impacted by this week’s flash flooding to clean up.

The County, Town of Vestal and Taylor Garbage have placed dumpsters in Vestal on Tharp Street, Richards Avenue, Grand Avenue and at Kintner Estates.

Only flood debris can be placed in the dumpsters, which will be picked up on Friday, July 28.  The tipping fee at the landfill is being waived and homeowners can apply for a tipping fee waiver for disposal of debris through Friday, July 28. Applications are available at the Vestal Town Hall.

In making the announcement at a Vestal Park, Broome County Executive Jason Garnar pointed to the resiliency of County residents who have had to deal with damage from several severe weather incidents.

Town and County officials continue to complain about the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s refusal to change the waterway infrastructure, especially on Choconut Creek.  Over the past several years, stricter restrictions had been put in place designed to protect fish and wildlife.

Meanwhile, residents in the area have experienced more and more frequent flooding, costing thousands, if not millions of dollars in property damage.
