Baseball season is heading down the home stretch and Foot ball season will be starting soon, what makes us a true fan of these sports?

You've heard the Beach Boys song, 'Be True To Your School'. It's a song about hometown pride, but the same principals apply to many sports fans and the teams they support.

We are very fortunate to have professional sports here in Greater Binghamton. In the summer we can see a baseball game with our Binghamton Mets and in the winter we can enjoy hockey with the Binghamton Senators.

Our love for sports includes local high school, college teams and goes beyond our back yard to major league teams in the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB.

So what defines a true sports fan? In my opinion it's someone who has a love for the game and a sense of loyalty for the teams they support.

Many fans are particular to the area they live in and will support teams that represent that region, like the Buffalo Bills, Giants ,Jets, Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Islanders, Knicks, Nets, etc.

There are many sports fans that support teams not in their region since there's no law that says they can't! If you're a fan of that team and support them through the good and bad years, you're a true fan and should be respected as such.

I have been a New York Giants fans for years and I still support them through the good and bad times.

I never understood why people from this area would root for a team like Dallas or San Francisco, until I realized that many fans had a role model or a loved one that were a fan of a certain team and they shared that with them growing up.

It doesn't really matter as long as you're true to your school or team.
