The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is hosting a public meeting July 18 to talk about protecting the Southern Tier from future flooding.

Officials will discuss benefits, concerns and risks associated with the levee systems in Broome, Chenango and Tioga Counties, flood mapping, insurance and preparedness at the Smart Energy Building at Binghamton University at Murray Hill Road.  The meeting is set to run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation owns and operates many flood control facilities in the Southern Tier.  DEC representatives are scheduled to be on hand along with officials from the Broome County Office of Emergency Services.

The formal presentations start at 7 p.m. and will include a question and answer portion followed by an open house.

The twelve levee systems being addressed at the meeting include Northeast, Northwest and South Binghamton, Endicott, Vestal, Johnson City, Whitney Point, Lisle, East and West Greene, Oxford and Nichols.
