National Weather Service, Binghamton Warning Coordination Meteorologist, David Nicosia talks about the changes to forecasting in the Twin Tiers over the years on the April 4 edition of the weekly, local public affairs show, Southern Tier Close Up.

Host, Kathy Whyte teases Nicosia about choosing a thankless career with many people second-guessing meteorologists and their forecasts and often being annoyed with them both when they are right and when the forecasts or warnings are off the mark.

Nicosia says the region suffered under the coldest winter since records began to be kept at the Binghamton airport in the 1950s but climate change is not to blame.  Instead, Nicosia says the cold temperature and fairly low snowfall totals are more the result of natural cycles.

The national weather service website www.weather.gov provides information on local forecasts that can be customized to the user as well as warning, hazardous weather outlooks, river levels and precipitation totals.

Southern Tier Close Up airs Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
