The Executive Director of the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross, Shelly Bierwiler, is the guest on the February 28 edition of the weekly local public affairs program, Southern tier Close Up to mark March as American Red Cross Month.

Bierwiler points out local volunteers have responded to dozens of fires since the end of the year, assisting residents with their emergency needs.

She also talks about preparedness, especially when it comes to thinking about fire safety.

The local chapter has been taking nomination for its Real Heroes, who will be recognized in May at the Real Heroes Breakfast.

Bierwiler says there are several categories in the awards including Emergency Services, Good Samaritans, Youth Good Samaritans and even pets.  That's pets that rescue people as well as pets that have been rescued.

More information about classes, educational materials and the local work of the American Red Cross can be found at www.redcross.org.

Southern Tier Close Up can be heard Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
