The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says the Southern Zone, which includes most of the Southern Tier and Central New York, is the most popular region for deer and bear hunters.

Big Game Season runs from sunrise November 15-sunset December 7.

The DEC says of 550,000 licensed hunters in New York, about 85% hunt in the Southern Zone. Harvest in the region accounts for close to 6% of the deer kill state-wide and 30%-60% of the bear kill.

Hunting season in the Northern Zone that includes the Champlain and St. Lawrence Valleys, Tug Hill Plateau, Adirondacks and Eastern Lake Ontario Plain runs from October 25-sunset December 7.
