Looking back on my childhood, (which is something I seem to do a lot of these days) it was a whole different world in terms of what was socially excepted.

Our parents didn't cow tow to our every needs and give us an entitled attitude, and lack of appreciation for what we received in life.

I'm not saying all of todays parents are like that, I'm sure many instill values and morals in their children, it just seems that we've become a society of whiners.

That's not a completely bad thing, but growing up in a world where spankings were a way of life, not only your parents but, other family members, like aunts and uncles, even teachers had the "Board of Education" and if you were bad you got a spanking.

I’m not condoning extreme physical abuse on children, I think one of the reason spankings are no longer socially acceptable is some people took it too far, as in the recent case of the pro football player who whipped his 4 year old with a switch.

Smoking was another issue that was socially acceptable, people smoked in the house, in restaurants, the workplace and in the car with children inside and the windows rolled up at times, we didn’t use seatbelts or car seats, and mothers held their babies in the car and no one thought any less of it.

The seat belt rules have saved many lives and I’m sure the attention that this recent child abuse case has received will also send the message that hitting your children is not acceptable in todays society.

Still if a child is way out of line and behaving badly, I’m sure many parents will still give them a swat on the butt, others may choose to punish them by non physical methods.

Whichever choice, society will be standing by to judge the actions.
