One thing those of us who love to fish usually never have to worry about, is the health of our catch. Unfortunately it's recently been confirmed a smallmouth bass caught in the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania shows a cancerous tumor in the mouth.

Reported by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission,  the fish was taken from a section of the river near Duncannon, PA in 2014. This is the first confirmed ever confirmed cancer of a smallmouth bass, although it's no the first of it's kind in the United States. So far, only one of these cases had been found in Pennsylvania section of the Susquehanna River, although some fish have been found with lesions and sores. Anglers are cautioned to avoid consuming any fish with these types of visible symptoms.

Many of us have enjoyed fishing in the Susquehanna River which of course runs through our local New York towns, villages and cities. So far, no reports of any cancerous fish have been reported in the New York section of the river. For more information, visit the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission website.
