Shrimp Trailer Peeled Open By Binghamton Bridge

A tractor-trailer hauling thousands of pounds of shrimp came to a screeching halt when it got wedged under a railroad bridge on Binghamton's East Side.

The driver of the truck learned too late that his rig was too tall to clear the span on Robinson Street.

The vehicle was traveling west when it slammed into the bridge, which has a posted height of eleven feet, seven inches.

No injuries were reported as a result of the crash. which happened around 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

The truck and trailer appeared to be owned by J&R Schugel Trucking of New Ulm, Minnesota.

A section of Robinson Street between Whitney Avenue and Alice Street was closed to traffic for hours.

Dozens of 25-pound cartons of frozen shrimp bound for Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurants were in the wrecked trailer.

Workers from U-Save Towing and Recovery of Binghamton transferred the seafood to another refrigerated trailer unit.
