Just recently Amazon Prime but a Racism warning on old “Tom and Jerry’ cartoons, which brings up the question, has the world gone too politically correct?

The art of cartoons, movies, even song lyrics and musicals that were created in a time when ethnic and racial prejudices were common will most likely be seen or heard in those projects.

The Tom and Jerry cartoons had an African American maid named “Mammy Two Shoes” back then people thought nothing of it, but today’s society would probably find it extremely offensive to many people.

Take the case of the old Dick Tracy show cartoons; they had a character named Joe Jitsu, who was depicted with large glasses and big buck teeth, this was 1961 and  we obviously didn’t have the relationship with Japan that we have now, and again those images would offend many people of Japanese or even Asian decent.

Personally I think it is unfortunate that there was a time when those types of prejudices existed and I can fully understand why these early depictions would be hurtful to many people for a variety of reasons.

I am in support of adding a warning or disclaimer to film or art that includes these types of prejudices, I think Amazon Prime got it right.

The racism warning on the Tom and Jerry DVD collection contains a clip from Whoppi Goldberg.  Check it out below, along with a few of the old clips that I am talking about in this blog
