Sammy Hagar Vs. The Ramones – Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame, Round One

Sammy Hagar Vs. Ramones

Sammy Hagar takes on the Ramones in one of the biggest musical style clashes in Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame history. Who gets your vote?

Every month, our readers decide which of eight legendary artists or bands will be honored for their contributions to the classic rock genre. After releasing two albums with the highly influential but commercially under-appreciated band Montrose, Hagar launched his solo career in 1976 with the album ‘Nine on a Ten Scale.’ Over the next decade, thanks to seven more studio efforts and near-constant touring, he became an arena headliner with an arsenal of hits such as ‘Your Love is Driving Me Crazy,’ ‘There’s Only One Way to Rock’ and, of course, ‘I Can’t Drive 55.’

He then spent a decade as the lead singer of Van Halen, helping that group not only to survive the departure of David Lee Roth, but to reach new, even higher commercial success. He left the band rather acrimoniously in 1996, and now splits his time between a re-energized solo career and as the frontman for the hard-rock supergroup Chickenfoot.

The Ramones meanwhile, might just be the most important band in punk-rock history. After forming in the early ’70s in their hometown of New York City, they released their masterful self-titled debut in April of 1976. Songs like ‘Blitzkreig Bop’ and ‘I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend’ stripped decades of bloat away from the rock and roll world almost overnight. The album kicked off a four-record streak that helped write the rules for an entire new genre, and the band’s influence seems to grow every year thanks to the work of admitted disciples such as Green Day, Metallica and even Pearl Jam.

So which of these two very different acts will move on to the next round of this UCR Hall of Fame competition? It’s up to you! You can vote once an hour between now and Sunday, June 15 at 11:59 PM ET. The next inductee into the Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame will be announced on July 1. Be sure to read our official rules.
