Although 2016 is just barely underway, there have been plenty of major news stories in the classic rock world. We'll compile the biggest ones all year in the above gallery.

The theme early on, unfortunately, was one of loss – as David Bowie, Glenn Frey and two members of the Jefferson Airplane passed in succession. That their passing came on the heels of the death of Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister in late 2015 only heightened the sense of mourning. Oddly, Signe Anderson, the original Jefferson Airplane singer, and stalwart member Paul Kantner died on the very same day.

It wasn't all about departures, however. The gallery also includes news about a Kiss mini-reunion, the return of a Van Halen legend to the internet, a new tour and autobiography from Bruce Springsteen and classic-rock fun at the Super Bowl.

The 58th Annual Grammy Awards meanwhile seemed positioned to showcase classic rock at its finest, with tributes on tap for Bowie, Frey and Kilmister – not to mention more than a dozen nominees. Unfortunately, the all-star salutes included one misfire, and classic rock artists went an astounding 4-for-14 on the night.

Elsewhere, two of rock's signature acts promise to make 2016 a very fun year for live shows, while Mountain Jam announced its 12th annual festival lineup.

There much more. Scroll through the above gallery to relive the biggest rock news stories of 2016.
