There are 6 carousels in the Binghamton area. I had no idea until last year and I've been here for over 3 years! It made me wonder, do people in the area even know about them?

Shoe manufacturer and all around good guy George F. Johnson donated the carousels to the area with the thought that recreation would help children be happy which would help lead a better and more productive life. So, between 1920 and 1934, the 6 merry-go-rounds were installed.

During those early years, they were well attended, as Mr. Johnson's one requirement was they always be free to ride. These days, however, they are not well ridden. What a shame! We have 6 of only 150 carousels of this type in the world. We should take some time and go for a spin! I plan to go on a carousel tour this year. I found all the info about them at the Binghamton tourism site.

I may be wrong, but I think even long time residents don't go anymore. So, I have to ask:
