Retired Syracuse Bishop James Moynihan Dies

Reverend James Moynihan, a retired bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse has died. He was 84.

According to the diocese, Moynihan died Monday. He had served as the ninth bishop of Syracuse between 1995 and 2009.

Bishop Robert Cunningham released a statement announcing Moynihan's death. Cunningham said: "We thank him for a lifetime of service to the Church and in a very special way for his service to the Diocese of Syracuse."

Moynihan was a Rochester native. He was ordained a priest in December 1957. He was installed as Syracuse bishop in May 1995 and retired in April 2009.

The viewing, vigil and the funeral for Moynihan will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse.

The reception of the body is scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m. with viewing continuing until 7 p.m., when a vigil will be held. Viewing will resume on Friday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. by Timothy Cardinal Dolan, the Archbishop of New York
