Renovations Underway at Site of JC Tragedy
A Johnson City house where two young boys died in an arson fire is being reconstructed.
Renovation work at the property at 145 Floral Avenue began a few weeks ago.
Two brothers – 3-year-old Michael Maxwell and 4-year-old Joshua Maxwell – were killed in an October 2015 blaze. Their mother and another woman were critically injured in the fire.
Property records indicate the heavily-damaged house was sold to a Broome County man last July. He could not be reached to comment to discuss the planned renovations.
The upper portion of the three-story structure where the fire was the most intense has been removed. More materials have been delivered to the site in recent days.
Records indicate there had been seven apartments in the building. Johnson City Mayor Greg Deemie said he doesn’t know how many units are planned for the renovated structure.
Deemie said officials are going to keep an eye on the project to ensure that the building is in compliance with all housing and fire codes before it is reoccupied.
