A peaceful morning at home turned into a nightmare for music industry veteran Jerry Sharell on Sept. 15, when a confrontation with a machete-wielding intruder left him with severe stab wounds to his neck and head.

ABC reports that Sharell, a DJ and former A&R executive who helped shepherd the careers of a long list of artists that includes the Eagles, Carly Simon and Queen, was home with his girlfriend when they were confronted by her ex-husband, who had already been served with a restraining order preventing him from establishing contact with her.

According to police, Sharell -- who had recently re-entered the dating scene after losing his wife to cancer -- and his girlfriend were held hostage and savagely attacked. "Over the next three hours, it appears that he held his ex-wife and her new boyfriend hostage inside the residence," LAPD Sgt. Jeff Nuttal told reporters. "Sometime during that time, the new boyfriend had been stabbed repeatedly, and then the suspect turned the weapon on himself and stabbed himself."

The ordeal came to an end after the assailant's ex-wife escaped the house and called 911. Sharell was rushed to the hospital, and according to ABC's report, he's expected to survive his injuries, although the full extent of the damage is presently unknown. "It's basically a really good neighborhood," Sharell's stunned neighbor later told reporters. "So I was just totally shocked because he's just the greatest guy."
