Problems Persist with Downtown Binghamton Parking Kiosks

People visiting Binghamton continue to complain about downtown parking kiosks that fail to operate correctly.

The problems with the kiosks persist, with some units displaying a message to "Use another machine" and others unable to process credit card payments.

Several people have complained about the balky kiosks to WNBF News in the last few weeks. Some visitors who were in Binghamton for last weekend's state basketball championship games were frustrated about being unable to pay and worried they would be ticketed.

Mayor Richard David Tuesday said he was unaware of any recent problems with the kiosks, which started to appear downtown in 2016.

About 55 kiosks provided by Parkeon were installed on downtown streets to replace hundreds of antiquated parking meters.

Two parking kiosks on State Street were not operating properly on Wednesday afternoon. Vehicles parked near the malfunctioning kiosks had tickets under their windshield wipers.

It's not clear what happens when drivers receive tickets after encountering a kiosk that isn't working. Representatives of the police traffic division were not immediately available to comment on the issue.
