Thousands of NYSEG customers lost electric service after a series of strong thunderstorms raced through the Southern Tier and upstate New York.

Power had been restored to many areas by Monday morning but utility crews were continuing efforts to get things back to normal.

At one point, about 2,800 NYSEG customers were reported without electricity.

The hardest hit area was Tioga County, where the utility indicated 1,961 customers were without power. That represented nearly ten percent of NYSEG’s customers in the county.

About 750 customers in the village of Owego were affected. The utility reported 564 customers in the town of Tioga and 452 customers in the town of Owego were without electricity. Outages also were reported in the towns of Nichols, Newark Valley and Candor.

In Broome County, about 500 customers were affected by outages. Most of those customers were on Endicott’s North Side and in the neighboring section of the town of Union.

Endicott police said a traffic signal at Pine Street and Oak Hill Avenue was not operating because of the power problem.
