Authorities say 71-year-old Robert Buchta was hit by a bus as he crossed Main Street around 7:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Buchta was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City with traumatic head injuries.

Three Binghamton City School District elementary students were on the bus when Buchta was hit. The children and the bus driver were not hurt.

Detectives say Buchta was not in a crosswalk when he was struck by the westbound vehicle.

The bus was being operated by First Student Incorporated under contract with the school district.

Police did not release the name of the bus driver. A spokesman at First Student headquarters in Cincinnati said the driver won't be operating buses pending the outcome of the investigation.

Main Street between Crestmont Road and Matthews Street was closed until around 11 a.m. while an accident reconstruction team worked at the crash scene.

People with information about the incident may contact the Binghamton police detective bureau at 607.772.7080.
