An effort to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer is going where it’s never gone before in Broome County: police departments.

Both Binghamton and Endicott have announced that they will waive the normal regulations against facial hair on officers for the No Shave November cancer awareness campaign.

In addition to male officers being allowed to grow beards, female officers in Binghamton will be allowed to paint their finger nails pink for breast cancer awareness.  Normally, the Police Department grooming policy prohibits facial hair and nail polish.

In Endicott, each participating officer is donating $50 with the Endicott Police Benefit Association matching the donations to go to Mercy House of the Southern Tier.

Binghamton officials say they have about 84 officers participating and have already raised $2,380 dollars.
