Pennsylvania environmental officials say the state's short bear season ends with fewer bruins than expected being taken.

The first weekend of the bear hunting season November 18 and 19 ended with an estimated 666 bears killed across Pennsylvania.

The Associated Press quotes the news website PENNLIVE.com as indicating rain over the weekend appears to have played in the bears' favor.  Besides being uncomfortable conditions for hunters, the rain also contributed to reduced visibility.

The reports indicate a fairly large bear was shot southeast of the Binghamton area in Wayne County.  That bear was weighed at 648 pounds.
