Written by Ian Anderson for Jethro Tull's 1971 album Aqualung, it was pieced together from separate tracks from the other band members and dubbed in.

The song refers to the steam that is exhausted from the old steam locomotives of the past, the drums and bass line resembled a train rolling down the tracks.

In 2005 Styx recorded an album of 14 classic song covers called 'Big Bang Theory' in addition to remakes of the Beatles, the Who and Allman Brothers, they recorded the Tull Classic 'Locomotive Breath'
