The facility at 203 Court Street is in a building that previously housed the Sheltered Workshop. The federal government in September 2015 announced it had signed a 20-year lease for the VA clinic.

The downtown clinic replaces the operation that's been located at the Greater Binghamton Health Center at 425 Robinson Street for about two decades.

Dr. David Hunsinger, the clinic medical director, said the new site has about two-and-a-half times the amount of space as the existing location. The staff at the new clinic will begin seeing patients on Monday.

Hunsinger said the new facility will offer a wide range of services to veterans.

More "telehealth" services will be available in Binghamton, permitting veterans to utilized a computer to take advantage of the expertise of specialists at the Syracuse VA Medical Center.

17,000 veterans in Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Otsego counties are eligible for care at the Binghamton clinic.
