City officials say demolition of the State Street walkway linking the Governmental Plaza with the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena is about to get underway.

The project will result in the closing of State Street between Hawley and Stuart streets.

The affected section of State Street is scheduled to be closed starting at 7 a.m. Thursday.

Northbound traffic will be detoured to Susquehanna and Exchange streets. Southbound traffic will be detoured to Hawley and Washington streets.

Demolition work is expected to be completed by August 26. Gorick Construction of Binghamton will tear down the walkway, which has been out of service for several years.

The city will share the cost of the demolition with Broome County and New York State, the other tenants of Governmental Plaza.

The walkway removal represents the initial step in a series of improvements planned on State Street. New bike lanes and pedestrian crossings are part of the project. The traffic signals at the intersection of State and Hawley streets also will be replaced.

Construction on the improvement project is scheduled to start late this year.
