NYS Fire Departments Holding Recruitment Event
Volunteer fire companies across New York state are seeking support from the communities they serve with a recruitment initiative.
Broome County residents are being encouraged to visit fire houses in their community to meet current volunteers and to learn more about how they might help.
The annual Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment Day is designed to let people know about the needs and opportunities that exist.
Broome County fire coordinator Thomas Vroman said the local effort is being held in conjunction with the statewide Recruit New York campaign.
Vroman said fire companies are finding it more difficult to attract a sufficient number of volunteers. He said many people are busier than in the past, making it tougher to devote the time needed to serve as volunteer firefighters.
Most of the 32 volunteer fire departments in Broome County will open their stations on Saturday to welcome residents.
Vroman said departments can use help from people who can serve as firefighters and those who are able to provide other types of support.
