New Yorkers are being urged to promptly protect their personal information that may be accessible online following Yahoo's disclosure of an unprecedented data breach.

Yahoo on Wednesday disclosed that a third party had breached its servers and accessed the personal data of more than one billion users.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said residents should take immediate action to increase security of their personal information online.

The compromised data belonging to Yahoo users reportedly includes email addresses, telephone numbers and dates of birth. Passwords and answers to security questions also may have been stolen.

Schneiderman is urging people who have a Yahoo account to change their passwords and security questions. Changes should be made to any other accounts in which people have been using the same or similar information.

The attorney general's office says it is "examining the circumstances of the breach" and Yahoo's disclosure of the problem to law enforcement officials.
