Kmart owner Sears Holdings last month announced it planned to shut down the Binghamton operation in mid-December.

The store is the largest tenant in the plaza on West State Street.

Mayor Richard David said the city is working with New Jersey-based Galesi Reality Corporation, which owns the plaza, to discuss possible options for the property.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said given the condition of the plaza, Kmart isn't going to be replaced by another big retailer.

The mayor said the discussions with the owners involve "redesigning and, perhaps, repurposing that entire plaza space."

David declined to outline any specific concepts that might be considered. He said the city and the property owners are working "on a variety of different scenarios to determine which one is the most realistic fit" for the site.

The mayor stressed the conversations have been in the "very preliminary phases."

Galesi Realty representatives could not be reached Tuesday afternoon to discuss the future of the Binghamton Plaza.
