Many political-watchers are making a big deal over he number of women serving in national and local governments with the new year.

The new Congress has a record number of female Representatives as Nancy Pelosi regained the gavel as speaker.

The Broome County Legislature, for the first time, has two female caucus leaders.  Republican Cindy O'Brien is the new Majority Leader while Democrat Mary Kaminsky continues her duties as Minority Leader.

Republican Daniel Reynolds was unanimously reelected as Chairman of the County Legislature in its Organizational Session January 3.

In the New York State Senate, committee assignments are being set.

Senator Fred Akshar (R.-Binghamton) is named the Ranking Member for the Senate Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse as well as the Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections Committee.
