We have minor league hockey, and minor league baseball, and now we will have minor league basketball.

WBNG TV reported yesterday that we will have an A.B.A. team maybe as soon as this year. The American Basketball Association is a step below the NBA D-League. The owner is Jimmy Evans who played basketball for Chenango Valley, SUNY Broome and played basketball in Europe for three years

WBNG said the team will play 20 games, 10 of which will be played at the gym at Davis College on Riverside Drive in Johnson City. Jimmy Evans also said there will be four or five tryouts and a search for a head coach will start right away.

I think this is awesome. Not only will we see the future stars of the New York Mets with the Rumble Ponies, and the New Jersey Devils with the Binghamton Devils, but now we could see some future NBA stars as well. With all of that and the Division 1 athletics at Binghamton University and the Dick’s Sporting Good Open, Binghamton is a great place to live if you are a sports fan.

I don’t know what they are considering for a name, but I think the Binghamton Freezoners has a nice ring to it.
