Megadeth Cover Metallica’s ‘Phantom Lord’ With Jason Newsted

)

With two former members of Metallica touring the continent together as part of Gigantour 2013, it was pretty much a given that Megadeth‘s Dave Mustaine and Jason Newsted would share a stage at some point. It took a while, but that collaboration finally took place last night (Aug. 11) in Toronto.

Megadeth performed ‘Phantom Lord,’ a Metallica song co-written by Mustaine when he was still a member of the band, with Newsted, Metallica’s bassist from 1986 to 2001, singing lead. You can watch the video of the performance above.

Just a week ago, it looked like the collaboration wouldn’t happen. “We’ve traded lyric sheets,” Newsted told Team Rock Radio. “We’ve traded down-tuned versions of ‘Phantom Lord’ and ‘Metal Militia’ to try to figure out what song we’re gonna play. But it has never come to fruition, and we only have a few shows left. So I’m not sure if it actually ever is.”

Last month, Mustaine all but promised it would, writing on Facebook after Newsted had to drop out of a couple shows, “I hope you are feeling better, Jason Newsted. We miss you and are ready to do ‪#‎MetalMilitia‬ when you get back. ‪#‎Gigantour‬.”

Newsted’s band, Newsted, played their final show with Megadeth over the weekend. Mustaine and company will pick up with Iron Maiden on Sept. 3 in Raleigh, N.C. In addition to ‘Phantom Lord,’ Mustaine also helped write ‘The Four Horsemen,’ ‘Jump in the Fire’ and ‘Metal Militia’ from Metallica’s 1983 debut album, ‘Kill ‘Em All.’ He was fired before recording began.
