An Endwell man has been convicted of attempted arson for trying to set a fire in Johnson City.

43-year-old Belven Fajardo had been accused of using two incendiary devices known as "Molotov cocktails" at a multi-family apartment house on Grand Avenue.

The incident occurred in May of last year. During a Broome County Court trial, prosecutors maintained Fajardo intended to cause damage at the building by causing an explosion.

Police had said the arson attempt followed an earlier domestic dispute.

Fajardo is scheduled to be sentenced on September 13. He faces a minimum of five years and a maximum of 25 years in state prison.

Fajardo had been arrested several weeks before the Johnson City incident.

In March 2017, he was involved in a tense standoff at a home on Marion Avenue in Endwell. Police had said he had reported an armed man was holding an infant hostage.

Investigators later determined the incident didn't happen. They said Fajardo apparently had been hallucinating after using crack cocaine.
