Authorities say 56-year-old Joseph Kapral Jr. of Albion in Orleans County had waded into the river in the town of Colesville with another man.

The two men were fishing near some rapids around the Ouaquaga Bridge when Kapral fell into the deeper current. His partner jumped into the water several times to try to pull him out. He eventually was able to pull Kapral to the river bank and performed CPR.

Because there is no cellphone service at the site, the other man had to drive away to call for emergency services. The 911 call was received at 5:46 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, efforts to revive Kapral were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say a heart attack contributed to the drowning. They said the death has been ruled accidental.
