Lockheed Martin's Tioga County facility will be doing more work to provide additional helicopters to the United States Navy.

A $382 million contract award for the Owego plant was announced Friday.

Lockheed Martin is to manufacture eight MH-60R Romeo aircraft for the Navy. A significant amount of work on the helicopter project is to be done at the local facility.

According to the company, the contract award will help to "ensure uninterrupted, on-time deliveries" of the aircraft to the U.S. Navy as it pursues international sales opportunities.

In a written statement, a Lockheed Martin spokesman said the helicopter "enables aircrews to perform diverse missions, including anti-submarine warfare, combat search and rescue, vertical replenishment and airborne mine countermeasures."

About 2,600 people work at the Owego Rotary and Mission Systems facility. The company did not indicate how many of those employees are involved with the MH-60R program.
