Today we begin a new feature called 'Our Neighborhoods.' It's a look at parts of Greater Binghamton that you may know exist, but may not know much more about.
Today we feature Whitney Point, NY,  conveniently located alongside Interstate 81, about a 20-minute drive north of Binghamton, and at the confluence of the Otselic and  Tioughnioga Rivers.

Whitney Point was first first settled around 1791, but began to flourish after the arrival of the Whitney family around 1800. Did you know that It was originally called 'Whitney's Point?'

Whitney Point has certainly seen it's share of disasters. It's amazing that it's still existing and thriving!

In 1897 there was an incredible fire that destroyed the village. Then in both 1935 and 1936, ice jams formed to flood the village terribly. There wasn't much left after the flood of '36, that's what led to the construction of the dam north of the village on the Otselic River.
