Leaders Applaud Barbara Underwood as Interim Attorney General

New York State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo of Endwell is applauding the approval of Barbara Underwood to serve as State Attorney General through the end of the year.

Underwood, who has been the state’s Solicitor General became Acting Attorney General when Eric Schneiderman suddenly resigned following The New Yorker reporting four women accused him of physically abusing them while they were dating him.

Those are allegations Schneiderman has denied but said that cloud would hamper the work of the office.

In a statement concerning Underwood’s appointment as interim Attorney General, the Democrat says: “as the first woman to serve in this capacity, another one of the glass ceilings of state government has been broken.”  Lupardo said she was honored to cast her vote for Underwood.

Support is also coming on the other side of the aisle.  New York State Senate Republican Majority Leader John Flanagan said the GOP had spoken highly of Underwood’s qualifications and had made it clear that the party did not want to have someone working as the temporary Attorney General who had the intentions of being a candidate to run for the seat.

Port Authority of New York board member, Leecia Eve and New York City public advocate Letitia James are each seeking the Democratic nomination in the primary for A.G.

New York City attorneys Manniy Alicandro and Keith Wofford are seeing the Republican nomination.
