Could Metallica play a part in saving two Australian men currently on death row in Indonesia? That’s what the pair's lawyer is hoping will happen. Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were sentenced to death back in 2006 after being found guilty of attempting to smuggle heroin into the country. This Sunday, lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis reached out to the heavy metal group on Twitter, asking them to make a plea to the President of Indonesida to spare their lives.

Lubis’ Twitter plea included two messages (seen below). In the first one he writes, “Hello @Metallica? You have to campaign to save life in Indonesia from Death Penalty. Come, sing and make plea to @jokowi_do2 [the president of Indonesia].” In the second, he asks the band to watch a YouTube video created by Mothers for Mercy, an organization who are against the death penalty in that country. You can see that tweet below.

If Metallica accepts the lawyer’s request, they wouldn’t be the only metal act to speak out in defense of the criminals. Indonesian President Joko Widodo is a self-proclaimed heavy metal fan, and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi and Napalm Death's Barney Greenway have already sent letters to Widodo asking him for a stay of execution. You can read Iommi’s letter here and Greenway’s note here.

At the beginning of this month, Chan and Sukumaran were moved from a prison on the mainland to Nusakambangan Island, also called “execution island.” If their death penalty sentences are not appealed, this is where they will face a firing squad.

You can find out more about the case on the Mercy Campaign website.
