Johnson City GOP Mayoral Candidates Face Off

The men seeking the Republican nomination for mayor of Johnson City addressed issues facing the village in a live radio broadcast.

Incumbent mayor Greg Deemie is being challenged by trustees Richard Balles and Martin Meaney in next Tuesday's primary.

Deemie, Balles and Meaney appeared on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Wednesday morning.

The candidates discussed topics that included public safety, the new Binghamton University health sciences complex in the village and the future of the Oakdale Mall. They also talked about some of the concerns involving the operation of the Binghamton-Johnson City Joint Sewage Treatment Facility.

Balles and Meaney strongly criticized some of the contents in a campaign advertisement that was mailed on behalf of Deemie's campaign a few days ago.

The winner of the Republican primary will face Democrat Andrew Holbert in the November general election.
