Guilty Plea in Death of Binghamton Motorcyclist

A man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with a crash that left a Binghamton man dead.

28-year-old Adam Alexander of Afton entered the plea Thursday morning in Broome County Court.

Alexander had been arrested after a Jeep Cherokee he had been driving struck a motorcycle operated by 36-year-old Jason Smith. The collision happened on Route 235 in the Town of Colesville on September 5, 2016.

Investigators said Smith sustained traumatic injuries. He died a short time after the crash at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

Alexander had been charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.

During his court appearance, Alexander pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, a felony; and driving a motor vehicle with .08 percent blood alcohol content, a misdemeanor.

Sentencing has been scheduled for June 22. According to the district attorney’s office, Alexander faces up to three to nine years in prison.
