'Asbury Park, N.J.' was the debut album from The Boss - Bruce Springsteen, released on this date (1/5) in 1973.

Bruce was not well known at the time and the album didn't exactly break any chart records at the time of its release. Two songs were released as singles - Spirit In The Night and Blinded By The Light. Neither did well chart-wise, although the Manfred Mann's Earth Band recording of Blinded By The Light did make the singles charts when it was released off 'The Roaring Silence' album. That version rocketed to the number one position in both the U.S. and Canada in 1976.

'Asbury Park, N.J.' was recorded in the Summer of 1972. The album peaked at number 60 on the U.S. album charts in 1973. I guess Bruce was just way ahead of his time when it came out because I think it's a great album, and many other agree.

Our Classic Rock Pick from the album this week is Bruce Springsteen performing Spirit In The Night from a 1973 concert in Los Angeles.
