The 10,000 square foot facility was constructed on the site of an old station that was demolished just over a year ago.

The new station went into service on February 15. Fire and ambulance equipment that had been housed on Pennsylvania Avenue was relocated to Apalachin's two other stations while the replacement project was underway.

The open house at the new Station One is scheduled for Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

The the new seven-bay station is about 50 percent larger than the old facility.

Voters in the Apalachin Fire District approved a plan to borrow $2.5 million to replace the outdated fire station.

Brian Rieber, who chairs the board of fire commissioners, said the department has about 70 active members.

Rieber said a brief dedication ceremony for the new fire station is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday.

Rieber said the open house was scheduled in conjunction with RecruitNY, a statewide campaign to encourage more people to join volunteer fire companies.
