Last week, I read story after story about the realization that high deductibles in healthcare plans are keeping people from seeing the doctors. It is also the number one debt issue for the middle class

I shook my head. Like they just figured this out? I have been struggling with this issue for a couple of years now!

If it weren't for my having an operation last year, I would not have had two other serious issues taken care of. The big problem after all that was having to pay for the operation. I owed about a third of the cost.

With everyone raving about how the Affordable Care Act would save us so much money, my comments were met with silence. I asked some simple questions. If premiums go down but deductibles go up, it is the same thing isn't it? Yes it is. We still don't have the money to put out. This deserves a "duh!"

Yet, here we are. The brilliant minds or should I say the mindless powers in Washington are just now figuring out this dilemma.

I understand the struggle and I understand the mentality of staying away from the doctor, but some things need attention. High blood pressure can kill you, yet millions walk around ignoring it daily. That's just one example. Diabetes is another biggie.

Here is your rule of thumb: if a family member asks you to go to the doctor, do it. You know why they are asking? Because they don't want to lose you. Think of how they would feel if you didn't go and you ended up dying. Sorry to be blunt. But that's the way it is.

How do we reconcile the high deductible and mounting debt? This is one time where logic comes in last. Listen to your family.
