Giacalone Sentenced to 12 Years for Striking NYS Trooper
A Broome County man was handed a lengthy prison sentence after he hit a New York State Police trooper with a car in Binghamton.
37-year-old James Giacalone of Glen Aubrey appeared in Broome County Court Wednesday morning to learn his fate after pleading guilty to attempted aggravated assault upon a police officer.
Judge Kevin Dooley sentenced Giacalone to 12 years in prison for seriously injuring Trooper Frank Abbott following a pursuit that ended on Conklin Avenue January 2.
Abbott shot Giacalone after he was struck by the suspect's vehicle. Authorities said Giacalone nearly hit another trooper before running from the scene.
Police tracked down Giacalone a few minutes later in a residential neighborhood on the South Side.
Giacalone agreed to a plea deal in September just before his trial on two attempted murder charges was about to start.
