A tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 81 in Cortland County resulted in a fuel spill that contaminated an area near the highway.

Authorities say 43-year-old Patrick Jernigan of Weedsport lost control of the truck as he was driving northbound on I-81 in the city of Cortland around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the Cortland County Sheriff's Office, the tractor-trailer went through a guiderail and over an embankment before winding up in the median.

Investigators say the truck driver was not hurt.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation sent a crew to clean up the fuel that spilled when the rig's tanks were ruptured.

More than 400 feet of guiderail was damaged in the crash, which happened at Exit 11.

In addition to the DEC, the Cortland Fire Department and the New York State Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
