Former New York State Governor Mario Cuomo has passed away due to heart failure.

The three term governor reportedly died just hours after his son, Andrew Cuomo took the oath of office for his second term as governor.

The elder Cuomo had been hospitalized in November due to heart issues.

Mario Cuomo has been described as a liberal voice in the state but has also been characterized as a creative word-smith veiling the true meanings of his initiatives.

Cuomo had been seen as a possible presidential candidate on several occasions but never launched a run for the White House.
