Sheriff David Harder pulled one of the Police Interceptor vehicles out of service in September after a carbon monoxide alarm was activated while a deputy was on patrol.

Harder said the deputy experienced no symptoms but he swapped vehicles as a precaution.

The sheriff said Feduke Ford in Vestal made changes to that SUV and another patrol vehicle that should make it less likely for exhaust to enter.

Ford has indicated the possible problems reported with law enforcement vehicles are linked to holes that were made when police equipment was installed by third parties.

Harder said a third Explorer Police Interceptor SUV now is at Feduke for the adjustments.

The Broome County Sheriff's Office now has ten of the vehicles in its fleet. All of them eventually will be going to the dealership for the servicing.

The sheriff said deputies have been advised that if they feel sleepy or dizzy while operating one of the Explorers to bring them back to headquarters.
