Health officials in New York State say the influenza season is over.

The Health Department made the announcement May 20 that flu is no longer prevalent in the state.

The announcement means health workers who either opted not to be vaccinated or could not be vaccinated against the flu are no longer required to wear surgical masks when interacting with patients.

The state had required masking during flu season to prevent the additional chance a vulnerable patient could be infected with the virus through contact with medial personnel.

Flu season normally hits its peak in February.
