Three years before he was sworn in as President of the United States, Donald Trump was being urged by some New York Republicans to run for governor.

As he considered the possibility of challenging Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, Trump was interviewed on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program.

Although Trump spoke about the Binghamton area and the challenges facing upstate New York, he also discussed some of the concerns that he ultimately would emphasize during his successful presidential campaign.

In the interview, Trump said he had been to Binghamton "many times." He noted that when he "was a little boy," he spent a few summers at Camp Hilltop in Hancock, 40 miles east of Binghamton. He recalled going to the camp "for four or five years."

Trump said he was familiar with the region, acknowledging "people are shocked to hear these little things."

At the end of the conversation, the future president was asked whether he'd ever had a spiedie. He said: "I did! I did have a spiedie." But he didn't say when or where he sampled the marinated meat sandwich that is so popular in the Southern Tier.
