The jersey that Mike Eruzione, the captain of the 1980 U.S. hockey team, wore when the Americans upset the Russians at Lake Placid, NY 33 years ago sold for $657,250 on Saturday night. The ‘USA’ emblazoned sweater was the centerpiece of an auction conducted by Heritage Auctions in New York City.

The stick Eruzione used in the USA-USSR game went for $262,900; the uniform he wore in the gold medal victory against Finland sold at $286,800 and the warm-up suit the captain wore during the gold medal ceremony fetched $26,290. Heritage will sell 18 other Eruzione items on Sunday.

While the Eruzione jersey didn’t achieve the $1 million value estimated by some collectors, it far outpaced the bloody sock worn by Curt Schilling in Game 2 of the 2004 World Series. The stained hose sold for just $92,612.

Beset by losses after his Rhode Island video game company, 38 Studios LLC, went bankrupt in 2012, Schilling listed the sock as bank collateral, necessitating the sale. The sock is the second of its kind the pitcher wore while helping Boston to a championship in 2004. The first sock was worn during Game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees and allegedly thrown out at Yankee Stadium.

Other sales included New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox items such as checks signed by Mickey Mantle and a game-worn Lou Gehrig jersey.
