Workers have been trying to smooth out a broken up section of roadway on a main route into downtown Binghamton.

Emergency repair work in the Front Street gateway project construction area was expected to be done last month but the operation was delayed for a few weeks.

Mayor Richard David said crews were dispatched to do some temporary patching to the area south of Prospect Street. He said the work "should be able to get us through the winter."

The mayor said the emergency repairs shouldn't cost the city anything because the contractor on the gateway project did the patching work.

Initially, the city had sought bids to have another firm to the repair job. But the general contractor - G. De Vincentis and Son Construction - opted to do the patching.

Business operators and Front Street residents have been complaining about the poor road conditions over the last several weeks.

The final phase of the gateway improvement work is scheduled to get underway in the spring.
