A decision is nearing on whether there will be a Republican primary for Broome County sheriff.

The Board of Elections will hold a hearing Tuesday morning on a challenge to hundreds of petition signatures filed by Jason Ellis.

Board officials say Paul VanSavage filed the challenge to the Ellis petitions. Ellis reportedly submitted 59 more signatures than the 1,000 required to gain ballot access. The challenge focuses on 302 signatures.

The commissioners are to decide whether Ellis submitted a sufficient number of valid signatures to force a primary against incumbent David Harder on September 13.
Broome County Democrats are not fielding a candidate for sheriff. Former Binghamton Mayor Matthew Ryan will appear on the November ballot as a candidate for the Working Families Party.
